Michael Smith received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology (2005), M.S. in Mechanical Engineering (2008), M.S. in Electrical Engineering (2012), and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (2015) from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Charlotte, NC, USA. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology and Construction Management (within the William States Lee College of Engineering) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Charlotte, NC, USA (faculty webpage: https://coefs.charlotte.edu/mssmith1/). His background includes instrumentation-based process control, process modeling, data analytics, data-driven decision making, and software development, with over 10 years of industrial experience in the energy industry (e.g., electrical, instrumentation and controls engineering) and more than 15 years of teaching experience (part-time at Central Piedmont Community College and full-time at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte). He has authored or coauthored over 30 papers published in international journals and conference proceedings. His research intersts include: process modeling, stability and control, adaptive control, process automation and optimization, data analytics, machine learning, applied energy, and electromechanical systems. Dr. Smith is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications.

He is a member of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, Senior Member), and SME (previously the Society of Manufacturing Engineers). Within ANS, he is a member of the ANS Fuel Cycle & Waste Management Division (FCWMD) and the ANS Human Factors, Instrumentation & Controls Division (HDICS). Within IEEE, he is a member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) and the IEEE Indusctrial Applications Society (IAS).
